Two Monks Honored At Prep Reunion

Fourteen alumni of the former Saint Vincent Preparatory School were honored during Prep Alumni Reunion Weekend June 12 to 14.

Father Mario Fulgenzi, O.S.B., received an Alumni of Distinction Award. Father Warren Murrman, O.S.B., received a Hall of Fame Award.

Father Mario is a 1959 graduate of Saint Vincent Prep, a 1964 graduate of Saint Vincent College where he earned a bachelor of arts degree and a 1968 graduate of Saint Vincent Seminary and the Stigmatine Fathers in Campinas, Brazil, where he earned a master’s degree. He has also done further studies at the Catholic Pontifical University of Campinas, Brazil.

The Vandergrift native entered the Benedictine Monastic community of Saint Vincent Archabbey in 1961. He made simple profession of vows on July 2, 1962, and solemn profession of vows on July 11, 1965. He was ordained a priest in Saint Vincent Archabbey Basilica by the late Bishop William Connare of Greensburg, on August 15, 1968.

Father Mario has served as pastor of Saint Gregory the Great Parish in Virginia Beach since 2000. He served the Archabbey’s priory in Brazil from 1967 to 1995, when he returned to serve as pastor of Saint Vincent Basilica Parish for five years.

Father Mario had a number of roles at the Archabbey prior to serving in Brazil, including socius of brother candidates, assistant in the Benedictine Foreign Mission Society and the College bookstore. While in Brazil he directed the retreat house and program, coordinated lay ministers, served as parochial vicar and spiritual counselor to married couple groups, was master of formation and, in later years, served as prior. He was co–founder and member of the board of directors of a school for exceptional children in Vinhedo, Brazil.

Father Warren, a 1956 graduate of Saint Vincent Prep, graduated from Saint Vincent College in 1961 and Saint Vincent Seminary in 1965. He received a doctor of sacred theology degree from Munich University and a diploma in liturgical science from the Liturgical Institute in Trier, Germany.

The Jeannette native has been a member of the Benedictine Monastic community since 1958. He made simple profession of vows on July 2, 1959, and solemn profession of vows on July 11, 1962. He was ordained a priest in Saint Vincent Archabbey Basilica by the late Bishop William G. Connare of Greensburg on August 28, 1965.

He has primarily worked in the Archabbey’s educational apostolates, serving as a faculty member at Saint Vincent Seminary since 1969, where he was academic dean for 11 years. He also serves as master of novices for the Benedictine monastic community.

His roles have also included assistant master of ceremonies, editor of the Saint Vincent Oblate, chaplain, and ridge procurator. He has served as director of liturgy for the Archabbey since 1996, and is also the novice master. He provides weekend assistance at local parishes, and is a regular confessor for the Benedictine Sisters at Saint Emma Monastery, Greensburg. He also assists the Catholic Campus Ministry at Penn State University by providing a monthly Mass in Spanish.

He taught at Saint Vincent College for a number of years and has served on the boards of the College and Wimmer Corporation, and the Monastic Council of Seniors.

He holds memberships in the Catholic Theological Society of America, and the North American Academy of Liturgy. He is a past member of the Liturgy Commission of the Diocese of Greensburg. He has been a member of the Westmoreland County Agricultural Land Preservation Board since 1998.
