Seventeen Saint Vincent Benedictines will mark jubilees of their monastic profession of vows or ordination to the priesthood in 2003. Their combined years of service totals 740 years.
The monks have been stationed throughout Western Pennsylvania, in Virginia, Georgia, Maryland and the Archabbey’s mission in Brazil.
Father Flavian G. Yelinko of Palmerton, Pa., served in archdiocese of Baltimore; dioceses of Pittsburgh, Erie, Altoona-Johnstown, Greensburg and Richmond. Marking 70 years of his June 18, 1933 ordination he is the longest-lived monk in Saint Vincent Archabbey’s history.
Two Benedictines will celebrate 60 years of their monastic profession of vows , Father Demetrius R. Dumm and Father Brinstan G. Takach, on July 2, 1943. Father Demetrius R. Dumm of Carrolltown, Pa., has worked primarily in the educational apostolate at Saint Vincent Seminary. Father Brinstan Takach of Greensburg, Pa., served in dioceses of Erie, Altoona-Johnstown, Greensburg and Richmond, Va.
Two monks will celebrate 50 years of their priesthood ordinations, while six will mark 50 years of their monastic professions of vows. Retired Saint Vincent Archabbot Paul R. Maher of Latrobe, Pa., served primarily in the educational apostolates of Saint Vincent College and Seminary, and at the Archabbey’s foreign mission in Taiwan. He was ordained on June 21, 1953. Father Philip Ghys of Assebroek, Belgium, served in dioceses of Savannah and Richmond. He was ordained on July 25, 1953. Brother Mark Evans of Canton, Oh., served at Saint Vincent College and is now in the Diocese of Richmond. He made his monastic profession on May 16, 1953. Father Reginald Bender of Chicago, Ill., has served primarily at Saint Vincent College and Archabbey. He made his monastic profession on July 2, 1953. Father Thomas Devereux of St. Marys, Pa., has worked primarily in the educational apostolate at Saint Vincent College. He made his monastic profession on July 2, 1953. Father Jeremy Bolha of Wilpen, Pa., served in dioceses of Pittsburgh, Greensburg, St. Marys and Altoona-Johnstown. He made his monastic profession on July 2, 1953. Father Simon Toth of Slickville, Pa., served in dioceses of Greensburg and Atloona-Johnstown and the archdiocese of Baltimore, in additon to the educational apostolates of Saint Vincent. He made his monastic profession on July 2, 1953. Father Campion Gavaler of Carrolltown, Pa., has worked in the educational apostolate at Saint Vincent College. He made his monastic profession on July 2, 1953.
Father Kurt Belsole of St. Marys, Pa., has served in the Archabbey’s educational apostolates at Saint Vincent Seminary and also taught at the Pontifical Athenaeum of Saint Anselm, Rome. He has been ordained for 25 years, his ordination occurring on May 27, 1978.
Five Benedictines will celebrate 25 years of their monastic professions of vows. Father Mauro deSouza Fernandes is from São Paulo, Brazil. He made his monastic profession on June 24, 1978. Father Richard Ulam of Pittsburgh, Pa., served in dioceses of Pittsburgh, Greensburg, Richmond and Wheeling-Charleston and at the Archabbey’s mission in Brazil. He made his monastic profession on July 10, 1978. Father Donald Raila of Amsterdam, N.Y., is the Archabbey’s Director of Oblates and has also served in dioceses of Greensburg and Erie. He made his monastic profession on July 10, 1978. Father Frederick Byrne of Trenton, N.J., served in dioceses of Pittsburgh, Greensburg and Altoona-Johnstown and in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. He made his monastic profession on July 10, 1978. Father Patrick Cronauer of Summerhill, Pa., has worked primarily in the Archabbey’s educational apostolate at Saint Vincent Seminary. He made his monastic profession on August 29, 1978.
