One Priest, One Deacon Ordained May 23

Most Rev. Edward C. Malesic, bishop of the Diocese of Greensburg, ordained one Benedictine monk a priest and one a deacon on Saturday, May 23, at the Saint Vincent Archabbey Basilica. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ordination Mass was not open to the public.

Father Ignatius Camello, O.S.B., has been serving in the Diocese of Greensburg during his diaconate, at Our Lady of Grace Parish, Greensburg, and Saint Benedict Parish, Marguerite.

He is the son Desideria Camello of Cotabato City, the Philippines and the late Reynaldo Camello. He has three brothers, Roland, of Northern Ireland, United Kingdom; Jose Rechie Camello of Cotabato City; and Elvin Camello of Cotabato City.

He attended Notre Dame Elementary School and graduated from Notre Dame High School for Boys in 1988. Both schools are in the Philippines. He earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Notre Dame University, Cotabato City, the Philippines, in 1992.

He migrated to the United States in 2001 and worked as an intensive care unit nurse for 13 years in Los Angeles, California. He began discerning a vocation and became a novice of Saint Vincent Archabbey on July 1, 2013. He professed simple vows on July 10, 2014 and began studies at Saint Vincent Seminary in the fall of 2014. He graduated from the Seminary on May 8, 2020,  earning both the master of divinity degree and the bachelor of sacred theology degree, in affiliation with the international Benedictine university in Rome, Sant’ Anselmo. Brother Ignatius also received the Hon. Bernard F. Scherer Award, given to the student who most exemplifies the qualities evident in the life of Judge Scherer, including breadth of learning, the integration of knowledge, faith and life, service to others through corporal works of mercy, and a strong witness of faith, hope and charity.

He made solemn profession of vows on July 11, 2017. He was ordained to the diaconate on May 25, 2019 by Most Rev. Edward C. Malesic of the Diocese of Greensburg at Saint Vincent Archabbey Basilica.

His assignments have included assistant to the director, monastery infirmary (2014-present), sacristan/assistant master of ceremonies (2014-present).

Brother Cassian (Lamar) Edwards, O.S.B., is the son of Angela Gonzalez of Metairie, Louisiana and the late Walton Lamar Edwards III. He is a 2007 graduate of Archbishop Rummel High School. He graduated from Our Lady of the Holy Cross College in 2011 with a bachelor of arts degree in theology. He has also done a graduate course at Notre Dame Seminary, Louisiana. He began studies at Saint Vincent Seminary in 2016.

He entered the novitiate of Saint Vincent Archabbey on July 1, 2015 and made simple profession of vows on July 10, 2016 and solemn profession of vows on July 11, 2019.

Prior to coming to Saint Vincent, he spent a year working in Louisiana as a youth minister. He began attending weeklong seminars at the Theology of the Body Institute in Exton, Pennsylvania. He enrolled in a certification program for Saint John Paul II’s teachings and began working with missionary groups known as “Generation Life” and the “Culture Project” to spread the message of the Theology of the Body.

Following profession, he was assigned as assistant to the director of Campus Ministry, Saint Vincent College (2016-present), and a Benedictine resident in Bonaventure Hall (2016-present).
