Five Novices Make First Vows

 The Rt. Rev. Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B., Archabbot of Saint Vincent Archabbey, Latrobe, accepted the first vows of five novices during ceremonies held at Saint Vincent Basilica on Friday, July 9.

Making their simple profession of vows were Brother Cajetan (Paul) Homick of Brackenridge; Brother Ignatius (Joseph) Kury of Akron, Ohio; Brother Boniface (Patrick) Hicks of State College, Pennsylvania; Brother Patrick (Stephen) Doering of Denver, North Carolina and Brother Vinh Nguyen of Chester, Pennsylvania, a native of Vietnam.

They recently completed the novitiate at the Archabbey. The novitiate is a year of prayer and study designed to aid postulants in determining their vocation as Benedictine monks.

BROTHER CAJETAN (PAUL) HOMICK

Brother Cajetan (Paul) Homick, O.S.B., J.D., was born September 13, 1968, in Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania. He is a son of Paul Homick Sr. and Patricia Homick of Brackenridge.

He attended Fairmont Elementary School and is a 1987 graduate of Highlands Senior High School. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science, with highest honor, from Saint Vincent College in 1991 and a juris doctor degree from Duquesne Law School in 1994. He was recently appointed by Archabbot Douglas as Administrative Secretary to the Archabbot, Assistant Director of the Vocation Office and as Second Assistant Fire Chief with the Saint Vincent Fire Department.

Prior to his arrival at Saint Vincent he served as an attorney for Fried, Kane, Walters, Zuschlag and Grochmal of Pittsburgh (1994-1998); vice president of the Catholic Cemeteries Association, Inc., of the Diocese of Pittsburgh (1996-1998) and vice president of the Pennsylvania Fire Services Institute, Inc., Harrisburg (1996-1998). He is presently a member of the American Bar Association, Pennsylvania Bar Association and the Allegheny County Bar Association.

BROTHER IGNATIUS (JOSEPH) KURY

Brother Ignatius (Joseph) Kury, O.S.B., was born November 15, 1975 in Akron, Ohio. He is the son of Joseph James Kury and Mary Rose Kury of Akron and the brother of Melissa Rose Kury, James Allen Kury and Miriam Elizabeth Kury of Akron.

He attended St. Anthony of Padua parochial school and is a 1994 graduate of Saint Vincent – Saint Mary High School. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science from John Carroll University, magna cum laude, in 1998 and is also a 1998 graduate of Borromeo Seminary. At John Carroll he was a member of the Student Union, choir, Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society, Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society, and a dean’s list student. He also received the Political Science Outstanding Scholar Award.

He was recently appointed by Archabbot Douglas as Assistant Guestmaster of the Monastery and Leander Hall.

BROTHER BONIFACE (PATRICK) HICKS

Brother Boniface (Patrick) Hicks, O.S.B., was born January 31, 1976 in Groton, Connecticut. He is the son of William and Mary Hicks of Burke, Virginia and the brother of Michael Hicks of Philadelphia.

He attended Grafton Bethel Elementary School, Silvergate Elementary School and Correia Junior High School. He is a 1993 graduate of Lake Braddock Secondary School, Burke, Virginia. He earned a bachelor of science degree in computer science and a master of science degree in computer science from Penn State University in 1997. At Penn State he was a member of the Tau Beta Pi Honor Fraternity and the Penn State Newman Club.

He was recently appointed by Archabbot Douglas as a lecturer in the Computing and Information Services Department, Saint Vincent College, and to the College Campus Ministry staff.

BROTHER PATRICK (STEPHEN) DOERING

Brother Patrick (Stephen) Doering, O.S.B., of Denver, North Carolina, was born December 21, 1971 in Toms River, New Jersey. He is the son of Charles H. Doering and Anne Elaine Doering of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He has two brothers, Charles H. Doering, Jr., of Barnegat, New Jersey, and William Joseph Doering of Brick, New Jersey.

He attended Lacey Township School System and is a 1990 graduate of Bishop Joseph V. Sullivan Catholic High School. He attended Southeastern Louisiana State University and Louisiana State University, where he majored in history. He is a 1995 graduate of Elon College with a bachelor of arts degree in history, with honors. He also studied in the pre-theology program at Saint Vincent Seminary.

Archabbot Douglas recently named him as Assistant Master of Ceremonies/Sacristan. He is also a firefighter in the Saint Vincent Fire Department.

BROTHER VINH-LINH BA NGUYEN

Brother Vinh-Linh Ba Nguyen, O.S.B., M.D., of Chester, Pennsylvania, was born October 13, 1971, in Ham Tan, Vietnam. He is the son of Linh Van Nguyen and Tuyet Thi (Vuong) Nguyen of Binh Thuan, Vietnam. He is one of seven children, including Tuyet Tam Nguyen, Duy-Linh Nguyen, Quynh – Tram Nguyen, Triet Linh Nguyen, Nhan Linh Nguyen and Thanh Thao Nguyen.

He attended Ham Tan High School in Vietnam. Brother Vinh earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Temple University in 1994 and a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1998.

He has been named Assistant Director, Vocations Office, and is also a Medical Resident at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
