Catholic Press Awards Heart to Heart

Heart to Heart, the magazine of Saint Vincent Archabbey, won a second place Catholic Press Association Award in 2018 for Best Magazine/Newsletter of the Year: Religious Order Magazines. This is the fifth consecutive year the magazine has received CPA honors. Heart to Heart has also earned CPA awards for general excellence, religious order magazine, third place, 2017, 2016, 2015; best cover, 2014, third place, for the Saint Vincent Fire cover designed by Jordan Hainsey; third place recognition for Best Feature Article, Religious Order Magazines, 2014; and a third place, 2006, for the best issue on the papal transition for the tribute to Pope John Paul II.

The publication was lauded for its “breadth of coverage,” according to the judges. Heart to Heart is edited by Kim Metzgar, director of Archabbey and Seminary Public Relations.

Archabbey Publications also received an award in the CPA book awards in a new category, “Backlist Beauty.” So We Do Not Lose Heart, written by the late Father Demetrius R. Dumm, O.S.B., , took third place in the category. The book was designed and edited by Metzgar, and published by Archabbey Publications in 2006, then reprinted in 2010 and in 2017.

“A book that lovingly points the way to ‘a happy ending’ for all believers. Inspiring reflections on mortality and God’s unfailing love to see us through,” the judges wrote.

Father Demetrius, who died in 2013 at the age of 90, was a former rector of Saint Vincent Seminary, and the author of numerous books: Flowers in the Desert: A Spirituality of the Bible; Cherish Christ Above All: The Bible in the Rule of Benedict; A Mystical Portrait of Jesus, New Perspectives on John’s Gospel; Praying the Scriptures; three books on the Sunday Homilies, co-authored with Father Campion Gavaler, O.S.B., and So We Do Not Lose Heart: Biblical Wisdom for All Our Days.

Metzgar, of Derry, has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Seton Hill University, and has directed the Archabbey and Seminary Public Relations Office since 1997. It is the ninth award for her work from CPA, including a 2006 CPA book award for design and production for Saint Vincent Basilica: 100 Years; in addition to her editorial work on So We Do Note Lose Heart, and book award winners in 2006, Renewed Each Morning, and in 2015, The Sunday Homilies. The Archabbey’s publications have received a total of eleven national Catholic Press Awards under her direction.
