Brother Philip F. Hurley, O.S.B., died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at Saint Vincent Archabbey after a long illness. He was born November 22, 1916 in Washington, Pa., one of four sons of the late James and Helen (Connors) Hurley.

He attended Immaculate Conception Parochial School and graduated in 1936 from Immaculate Conception High School in Washington. Brother Philip entered the Benedictine Monastic Community of Saint Vincent Archabbey in 1940. He made simple profession of vows on February 2, 1942, and solemn profession of vows on July 11, 1967.

Brother Philip has served the monastic community in the tailor shop (1940–43), and as sacristan for Saint Vincent Archabbey Basilica (1941–77). He helped distribute the famous Saint Vincent Bread baked by the monks from 1941 to 1963, and was in charge of haustus for the priests and brothers (1950–67). From 1966 until his death, he was assistant archivist for Saint Vincent Archabbey and College. On March 10, 1971, Brother Philip received the “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice” [for Church and Pope] Award from Pope Paul VI. It was presented by the late Bishop William G. Connare of Greensburg.

Brother Philip is survived by seven nephews and two nieces.
