Saint Vincent Archabbey will host an inspirational lecture by Carl T. Hasselman, M.D., entitled “The Passion and Death of Christ: An analysis of the Shroud of Turin from a Medical Perspective” on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at 7 p.m. in the Fred M. Rogers Center on the campus of Saint Vincent College.

The lecture will focus on medical aspects of the Shroud of Turin, the linen cloth that wrapped the body of Jesus Christ for burial after the Crucifixion. While the lecture includes medical information, the experience is very spiritual.

Dr. Hasselman is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at St. Margaret’s Hospital UPMC. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and worked as a military policeman for a four year enlistment. Upon completion of his enlistment, he obtained his B.S. degree in Neuroscience with high honors at the University of Pittsburgh in 1990. He then earned his doctorate of medicine with honors from Duke University School of Medicine. His internship, residency and subspecialty training in foot and ankle were completed by 2001 at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Shortly after September 11, 2001, Dr. Hasselman was called to active duty to serve as the Chief of Surgery and Orthopedic Surgeon for the Army Combat Support Hospital in Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan in support of Special Forces and the 101st Airborn Division. Since then he has served tours in Iraq, Kosovo and U.S. military training sites in the United States. He has earned the Bronze Star as well as numerous other military awards for his efforts.

He currently works for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and has earned numerous awards for customer service and patient appreciation. He lives in Oakmont with Deirdre, his wife of 19 years, and their four children.
