Gristmill Icon Exhibit Opens November 22 Friday, November 15, 2013
The Saint Vincent Gristmill will host an opening for an exhibit on Friday, November 22, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. featuring the works of Michael Goltz, whose specialty is church iconography. Along with an opportunity for attendees to view Goltz’s craft, there will also be a lecture on iconography given by Goltz at 7 p.m. The exhibit will run through December 7. Vatican Congregation Dismisses Rev. Mark Gruber from Priestly Ministry

 On July 29, 2013, Rev. Mark Gruber received a copy of the decree of the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith (CDF) notifying him of the penalty of his dismissal from the clerical state and dispensing him from his monastic vows. The decree of the CDF is the conclusion of a series of related events which began to unfold four years go. Saint Vincent Archabbey officials have refrained from commenting publically on the nature of all of these events. Now, in conjunction with the Vatican Congregation’s action, the most important aspects of related events leading up to the final CDF decree are summarized in this press release. Read More

 The Saint Benedict Education Foundation will host its third annual Sunset at the Barn on Saturday, August 10 at the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve on the campus of Saint Vincent College, Latrobe. The event will begin at 6 p.m. at the barn, followed by cocktails and hors d'oeuvres and a silent auction. Saxophonist James Boggs will provide musical selections. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.stvincentstore.com, or by calling the foundation office at 724-805-2607. Proceeds benefit scholarships for students attending the international Benedictine university, Sant' Anselmo in Rome. Brother Lawrence Machia Professes First Vows

Brother Lawrence Machia Professes First Vows Monday, July 15, 2013
Brother Lawrence (Shawn) Machia, O.S.B., who entered the monastery of Saint Vincent Archabbey as a novice in 2012, made his first profession of monastic vows, or simple vows, on July 10, 2013. He is the son of Keith and Louise Machia of Swanton, Vermont. He is a 2004 graduate of Missisquoi Valley Union High School. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in theology in 2008 from Eastern University. In 2011 he came to Saint Vincent, where he served as campus minister for social outreach, assisting the campus ministry team for spiritual and service programs. He will now enter Saint Vincent Seminary. Read More

Liz Cousins, associate director of Saint Vincent Archabbey and Seminary Public Relations, won a third place national award from the Catholic Press Association on Friday, June 19, for an article in the Archabbey's magazine Heart to Heart. Liz won third place recognition for Best Feature Article, Religious Order Magazines for an article, "Monks in the Military." The judges noted that the "author does an excellent job at bringing to light a topic that deserves more attention while also listing a history of this particular type of ministry." Read More

 Fire and Ice, a Saint Vincent Archabbey Publications production commemorating the 50th anniversary of the destructive Saint Vincent fire of January 28, 1963, is now available on DVD. The DVD offers 1 hour, 11 minutes of content highlighted by a 15 minute documentary featuring photographs and rolling film from that fateful day narrated by David Safin. Other features of the DVD include introductions by Br. Norman Hipps, O.S.B. and Jerome Oetgen, complete and unedited fire film footage, and coverage of the fire anniversary event.  Bishop Lawrence Persico, Bishop of Erie, and an alumnus of Saint Vincent Seminary, was the principal celebrant and homilist for the feast of the passing of Saint Benedict on March 21. The theme of Bishop Persico’s homily was Saint Benedict’s two-fold admonition to “seek God and to serve God.” Seeking God and serving God, the bishop noted, are goals for every disciple of Christ, since Christ is the model for each of us in seeking and serving God. He noted that the example of Pope Francis in these early days of his papal ministry has shown us that an important and a concrete way in serving God is our care for the poor and the marginalized in our world. During these days of the Lenten and Easter seasons, we are called to a deeper consciousness of what it means to seek and to serve God. Read More

Using archival photos and narrative accounts written by those who lived through the day of “fire and ice,” The Saint Vincent Fire traces the story of the fire and the subsequent rebuilding of the campus.
